By living with one less car and using public transportation, individuals can save, on average, $9,682 annually and $807 per month based on the February 10, 2011, average national gas price ($3.12 per gallon — reported by AAA) and the national unreserved monthly parking rate (APTA, February 2011).
How Did We Calculate Your Savings?
To determine the cost of driving, we used your vehicle's gas mileage, the price of gas and the daily cost of parking. We also included the average cost of maintenance and tire replacement for all vehicles at 5.37 cents per mile (AAA 2010 Your Driving Costs). Driving costs do not include insurance, license, registration, taxes, depreciation and financing.
The cost to ride the bus was calculated using the daily discounted bus fare for the system you chose, unless you entered your own fare.
